Preparations for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago
As Chicago gears up for the Democratic National Convention, the city is implementing more traffic restrictions around the United Center. Forklifts are seen transporting metal fencing to various locations, and crews are working diligently to install them near vehicle inspection stations at Monroe and Paulina streets. Other areas, such as Jackson Avenue and Wood Street, are also being cordoned off with concrete barricades and trucks.
Local Businesses and Expectations
Juliana Pena, co-owner of Su Taqueria El Rey Del Taco, a restaurant near the United Center where most DNC events will be held, shared her thoughts on the upcoming event. Pena expressed a mix of nervousness and excitement, as this will be an unprecedented experience for her. With nearly 50,000 visitors expected to attend the DNC, including Democratic representatives, elected officials, media, and others, Pena hopes for a good turnout at her restaurant.
Street Closures and Security Measures
Due to the large influx of people, street closures and parking restrictions will be enforced, especially around the United Center and McCormick Place. Buildings are divided into two zones: the red zone with strict security boundaries requiring tickets and vouchers, and the yellow zone with more relaxed security allowing public access through vehicle inspections. Additional street closures are set to begin on Saturday evening and last until Sunday, August 25th.
