Keyphrase: Democratic National Convention 2024
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received an immediate standing ovation when she took the stage on the first night of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center. Clinton took a moment to wave to the assembled crowd, as cheers of “Hillary!” echoed around the stage.
Clinton Criticizes Donald Trump
“Wow, there’s energy in this room, just like across the country. Something is happening in America. You can feel it,” Clinton said to cheers. She lashed out at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, prompting the crowd to chant “Lock him up.” It was an allusion to the chorus of “lock her up” that Clinton repeated at Trump rallies in 2016 when she was the Democratic presidential nominee. Clinton laughed at the irony surrounding her remarks, stating, “Donald Trump fell asleep during his own trial,” she said. “When he woke up, he made his own history: the first person to run for president on 34 felony counts.”
Tribute to Kamala Harris
Clinton also paid tribute to Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, for potentially breaking the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” and becoming the first female president of the United States. The former New York senator said it was “the honor of a lifetime” to be the party’s nominee in 2016, highlighting the progress made in shattering barriers for women in politics. “Together we have cracked a lot of cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling,” Clinton said.
Democratic Hopes for November
The focus on Harris’ historic candidacy could be key to Democrats’ hopes of electing more women in key states needed to win in November. Clinton’s speech at the Democratic National Convention 2024 emphasized the importance of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in politics, showcasing a united front against the Trump administration and its policies.
