Cleanup Efforts After Severe Weather in Thornton, Illinois
After Monday’s severe weather in Thornton, Illinois, cleanup efforts are in full swing. The storm caused significant damage to homes and downed power lines, leaving many residents without power.
ComEd’s Ongoing Restoration Efforts
Despite working 24-hour shifts, ComEd (Commonwealth Edison) is still hard at work to restore power to thousands of affected homes. They are making progress, and it is estimated that power will be fully restored to customers in the southern suburbs by Friday.
Challenges in Sandton and Assistance from Canada
In Sandton, about half of the town remains without power. The extensive damage was primarily caused by large trees falling on power lines. Severe storms, including tornadoes, wreak havoc on homes, cars, and buildings, with even the roof of the Sandton police station suffering damage.
Some of ComEd’s largest transmission lines were knocked out by the storm, leading to widespread power outages. In response, ComEd has deployed crews working around the clock to restore power as quickly as possible. While about 95% of customers have had their power restored, half of households in Sandton are still waiting for electricity to return.
To aid in the restoration efforts, approximately 300 ComEd line workers have traveled from Canada to provide assistance. Their expertise and manpower are invaluable in speeding up the process of getting residents back online.
