Boar’s Head Deli Meat Recall Linked to Listeria Outbreak
The recent recall of Boar’s Head deli meat products has raised concerns among federal officials as they investigate a potential link to a deadly listeria outbreak in the United States. The recall, which initially included 3,500 tons of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, has now been expanded due to safety concerns.
The Recall Expansion and Concerns
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that a total of 71 products, produced between May 10 and July 29, are included in the expanded recall. The products have a shelf life ranging from July 29th to October 17th and bear the establishment number “EST.12612” or “P-12612” within the USDA mark of inspection.
The issue came to light when a liverwurst sample from a Baltimore-area store tested positive for the same USDA strain responsible for the outbreak. As of the latest data, the listeria outbreak has affected at least 34 individuals in 13 states, two of whom have tragically passed away.
Symptoms and Impact of Listeria Infection
Listeria infection symptoms typically include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems, the infection can lead to more severe outcomes like headache, neck stiffness, loss of balance, confusion, and convulsions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) caution that listeria infection in pregnant women can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening infection in the newborn. It is crucial to seek medical attention promptly if experiencing any symptoms of listeria infection.
Precautionary Measures and Information
Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and deli cabinets for any of the recalled products. Thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing surfaces that may have come into contact with contaminated items is essential to prevent further spread of listeria. Additionally, antibiotic treatment is recommended for those diagnosed with listeria infection.
