Corrections Deputy Charged with Possession of Drug-Soaked Paper
Shadonna Jones, a Cook County corrections deputy, faces serious charges after being found in possession of dozens of sheets of paper soaked with suspected illegal drugs. The 54-year-old resident of Lynwood has been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, following an internal investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation and Discovery
Authorities obtained a search warrant for Jones’ home on July 25 after receiving a tip about potential drug smuggling activities within the jail. During the search, investigators discovered an envelope containing 48 sheets of paper that exhibited signs of being soaked with illegal substances. Additionally, a letter addressed to Jones from a detainee at the jail detailed a lucrative scheme involving the sale of the drug-soaked papers.
The substances on the papers were later identified as MDMB-BUTINACA, a synthetic cannabinoid, after testing by the Illinois State Police Forensic Services Division.
Consequences and Future Proceedings
Jones, who had been on-duty injured since July 15 following an altercation between inmates, was relieved of his duties after the search. He was taken into custody and appeared in court, where he was released pending trial. Further internal administrative investigations are underway, and Jones may face disciplinary actions, including termination.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and integrity in law enforcement to prevent the smuggling of contraband into correctional facilities.
