Illinois Democrats Gather for Presidential Nominating Convention in Chicago
Democrats from across the country came together in Chicago for the opening event of the party’s presidential nominating convention. Gov. JB Pritzker attended a breakfast meeting of three state delegations and spoke before Illinois Democrats, highlighting the achievements of the party in the state.
Pritzker’s Address and Political Aspirations
During his speech at the breakfast meeting, Pritzker praised the accomplishments of Illinois Democrats, including raising the minimum wage and expanding workers’ rights. He also took a swipe at Republicans for opposing these measures and criticized their environmental and educational policies.
While Pritzker has been considered as a potential running mate for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, he acknowledged that he may not be the top choice for a legislative victory. He also hinted at the possibility of not seeking a third term in 2026, despite being on track to become the longest-serving Democratic governor in the state’s history.
Guest Speakers and Key Figures at the Event
Several prominent Democratic figures attended the breakfast meeting, including Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, state Rep. Tammy Duckworth, and U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen. National figures like New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz, the wife of Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, also made appearances.
Walz emphasized the importance of the upcoming election and urged everyone to work together to make history. Pritzker later greeted delegates from Florida and Pennsylvania, introducing himself to unfamiliar faces and engaging with attendees.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was also vying for the vice presidential position eventually filled by Tim Walz, discussed the importance of battleground states like Pennsylvania in the upcoming election. Recent polls show a tight race between Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump in key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Illinois remains a crucial state for Harris, as no Republican presidential candidate has won there since 1988. Pritzker was scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden later in the day for the Democratic National Committee keynote address.
