Evanston Senior Basketball Teams Shine at Levy Senior Center
Evanston’s men’s and women’s senior basketball teams have been gaining recognition for their dedication and passion for the game. The teams were recently honored by Mayor Daniel Biss at a City Council meeting, shedding light on the city’s Levy Senior Center and its foundation.
A Passion for Basketball Across Generations
The senior basketball players range in age from 50 to over 85, with each member bringing a unique perspective and skill set to the game. Despite the age range, the players come together twice a week to train collectively at the center, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
One standout player is 85-year-old Neil Milbert, who not only plays basketball but also stays active by running five-kilometers and playing softball. Milbert’s love for the game dates back to his high school years, and he continues to find joy in playing alongside his teammates.
Building Community Through Basketball
For many players, joining the senior basketball league has provided an opportunity to reconnect with their love for the game, whether it started in childhood or on a high school team. The sense of community and support within the teams is palpable, with new members quickly feeling welcomed and embraced by their fellow players.
The league’s emphasis on teamwork and mutual support is exemplified by players like Azariah Stonar, known as “Coach Tree,” who encourages his team to focus on competing against themselves rather than against others. This mindset promotes personal growth and fosters a positive outlook on life.
Fostering Wellness and Friendship
Playing basketball at the senior level not only promotes physical health but also strengthens friendships and social connections. The men’s team, formed in 2002, has seen members form lasting bonds and compete in various tournaments and events, including the National Senior Games.
Through their dedication to the sport, these senior basketball players are proving that age is just a number and that staying active and engaged in sports can enhance overall well-being and quality of life.
