The Democratic National Convention Protests in Chicago
CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention is set to begin at the United Center, but nearby, a massive protest against the war in Gaza is gathering momentum. Thousands of demonstrators are expected to convene for a rally and march in Union Park on the Near West Side.
March on the Democratic National Committee Coalition
Demonstrators at Union Park are part of the March on the Democratic National Committee coalition, comprised of various groups united in protesting the Israeli-Palestinian war. The rally is scheduled to commence at noon, followed by a march towards the United Center area. Multiple speeches will be delivered at Park 578 near the Union Center, before returning to Union Park for another rally.
Voicing Against the War in Gaza
The coalition’s position on Monday is significant, as they have been advocating for months to make their voices heard by the Democratic National Committee. They aim to protest against the war in Gaza and U.S. aid to Israel, calling for attention from representatives and Democratic leaders. While the march was initially approved for just over a mile, demonstrators are pushing for longer routes, including a 2.4-mile path.
Hatem Abudayyeh, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee Parade Alliance, emphasized the importance of the coalition’s message, stating that regardless of the march length, their voices will resonate. He believes that the presence of thousands of demonstrators near the United Center will ensure that their message is not overlooked by key Democratic figures.
“The most exciting events this week are happening outside the United Center. Our presence, along with our message, is undeniable. The world is watching, including top Democratic leaders such as Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and Antony Blinken, who cannot ignore our demonstration,” Abudayyeh stated.
