Perdue Foods Recalls 167,000 Pounds of Chicken Nuggets and Tenders
Perdue Foods has issued a recall for over 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets and tenders due to reports of wires being found in the products. The affected products include Perdue Breaded Chicken Breasts, Butcher Box Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets, and Perdue Simply Smart Organics Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) identified that approximately 167,171 pounds of product may have been contaminated by foreign matter.
Discovery of Foreign Material Leads to Recall
After receiving customer complaints, both FSIS and Perdue investigated the issue and found foreign material in the products. Perdue, based in Maryland, acknowledged the presence of the material in a limited amount of consumer packaging. Jeff Shaw, Perdue’s senior vice president of food safety and quality, stated that the material was identified as a very fine wire that was accidentally introduced during the manufacturing process. As a precautionary measure, Perdue decided to recall all affected packages.
Consumer Safety Concerns and Identification of Recalled Products
While no injuries or adverse reactions have been reported from consuming the contaminated products, FSIS is concerned that some consumers may still have the recalled items in their refrigerators. The recalled chicken nuggets and tenders can be identified by specific product codes, best-before date of March 23, 2025, and the establishment number “P-33944” on the packaging. These products are sold nationwide, and consumers are advised to either discard the affected items or return them to the place of purchase. Perdue is offering full refunds to consumers affected by the recall.
Foreign Material Contamination and Food Safety
Foreign material contamination is a significant issue in the food industry and can lead to recalls to ensure consumer safety. In addition to wires, other foreign materials such as plastic fragments, rocks, insect fragments, and more have been found in packaged goods, prompting recalls. It is essential for food manufacturers to maintain strict quality control measures to prevent such incidents and protect consumers from potential harm.
