Republican National Convention: Make America Safe Again
The second day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee is centered around the theme “Make America Safe Again.” Republicans are focusing on issues of crime and border security, key priorities in their platform.
Republican Commitment to Border Security
Former President Trump endorsed the Republican platform, which includes a pledge to seal the border and control the influx of migrants. Policy measures under consideration involve stricter penalties for illegal entry and the implementation of what Republicans call the largest deportation program in U.S. history.
Chicago and Federal Funding
One of the key points of discussion is the city of Chicago, often cited by Trump as an example of Democratic policy failure. Republicans have vowed to cut off federal funding to “sanctuary cities” like Chicago and provide more assistance to law enforcement agencies in these areas.
Chuck Hernandez, a retired Chicago police detective and current Republican leader in the city, believes that more federal support is needed to tackle the crime issues. He has expressed confidence in Trump’s commitment to providing resources to fight crime in Chicago.
In April, the Biden administration, along with U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, allocated $78 million in grant funding to Chicago for community-based anti-violence initiatives, showing a different approach to addressing crime in the city.
As the Republican National Committee wraps up its session in Milwaukee on Thursday, the focus on making America safe and secure continues to be a key priority for the party.
