A swimmer’s extraordinary journey across Lake Michigan derailed by missing batteries
A swimmer’s attempt to cross Lake Michigan from Michigan to Wisconsin was abruptly halted due to missing batteries that caused him to lose his way. Jim Dreher, known as “The Shark,” was rescued after swimming 60 miles but realizing he had been heading in the wrong direction.
The unexpected setback
After several hours of swimming, Dreher’s GPS stopped working, leading him to unknowingly travel north instead of west towards Wisconsin. The realization came as a shock, as he believed he was closing in on his destination with only 23 miles left to go. However, he still had a daunting 47 miles ahead, with the weather conditions worsening.
A challenging decision
Faced with the prospect of continuing towards Milwaukee amid 9-foot waves and little hope of success, Dreher contemplated his options. Knowing that he would likely need rescue if he persisted, he grappled with the disappointment of another unsuccessful attempt at crossing Lake Michigan.
The missing battery mishap
The setback was attributed to two missing batteries that were crucial for Dreher’s GPS device. In an unfortunate turn of events, he had lost the bag containing the batteries while attempting to buy new ones. Left with only a wrist compass and his instincts, Dreher continued his journey westward, navigating by the sky and waves.
Despite the setback, Dreher remained determined to push forward, reflecting on the challenges he faced and the lessons learned from his latest endeavor.
